What is the truth?
That is where we start. You might think that since this blog is primarily
about health, we should start with a great motivational speech. Or perhaps
a fear tactic--statistics on the prevalence of obesity, diabetes, heart
disease, cancer, stroke, and autoimmune disease. Or maybe a more practical
approach--an easy, peasy new diet or an exercise program you can do in
minutes per day.
You might be thinking, “Why is truth so important? What I really need is
willpower, right?”
It comes down to our anatomy. But I’m not talking about heart, lungs, or
bones. I am talking about our soulical anatomy. We are made up of three
parts: spirit, soul and body. The Bible says:
May your spirit, soul and body be preserved complete without blame at the
coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. ~1 Thessalonians 5:23b.
Now most of us understand the body. That is the part we see, the part we
want to look good and feel good. The physical parts of us. We also know
that there is a “life force” inside of us, because there is an obvious
difference when a person dies. But what is that life force called? Is it
our “soul” or “spirit”? Do those words kind of mean the same thing, or are
there two inside invisible parts? It does get very confusing. And the Bible
says we aren’t able to figure that out on our own. Hebrews 4:12 says:
For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged
sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both
joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the
heart.
Did you catch that? The word of God is alive and active. It divides soul
and spirit and shows us the difference. The Bible is alive. It has the
power to reveal the truth. Or I could say He has the power to reveal the
truth. John 1:14 tells us that “the word” refers to Jesus Christ.
And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory
as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.
This is the foundation.
So, why is soul and spirit so important to physical health? Join me next
time as we start to discuss how the invisible parts of our bodies affect
the physical.
